Modern Bathroom Faucet Guide

How to Choose a Modern VIGO Bathroom Faucet: Single-Hole, Vessel & Wall-Mount

The finish is the easy part. The decision that actually makes or breaks a modern vanity is the one buyers skip: matching the faucet's mounting type and spout height to the sink sitting under it. Get that pairing wrong and even a beautiful matte-black faucet looks like a mistake.

In short: Pick your faucet by the sink you already have. A drop-in or undermount basin wants a single-hole faucet ($104.90โ€“$114.90). A raised bowl that sits on the counter needs a tall vessel faucet ($154.90) with a 10โ€“17 in spout for clearance. To float the faucet off the wall and free up counter space, choose a wall-mount ($89.90โ€“$124.90) โ€” but only if you can add a rough-in valve behind the wall. Matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel and chrome are offered across the modern range.

  • Choose the mounting type from the sink you already have โ€” single-hole for drop-in/undermount, vessel for raised bowls, wall-mount for a clear counter.
  • Vessel faucet height is a hard requirement: measure counter to bowl rim, then add 4โ€“6 in of arc clearance.
  • Wall-mount faucets need a rough-in valve set about 2 in behind the finished wall, so plan them into a remodel.
  • Matte black, brushed gold, brushed nickel and chrome run across the modern range โ€” match the faucet to cabinet hardware and the mirror frame, not the light fixtures.
  • Confirm two numbers before you fall for a spout profile: spout height clears the bowl, and spout reach lands the water near the drain.

The Three Decisions

What are the three modern faucet mounting types?

Modern bathroom faucets split into three silhouettes: single-hole (one deck-mounted body, one lever), vessel (a tall single-hole faucet built to arc over a raised bowl), and wall-mount (the spout and handles come out of the wall, nothing touches the counter). Each is a different look โ€” and a different install.

Type 01 โ€” Deck-Mounted

Single-hole: the modern default

Best for drop-in, undermount and integrated-counter sinks

A single-hole faucet uses one mounting hole and one lever for both temperature and flow โ€” the cleanest, most minimal profile you can put on a vanity. It suits the widest range of sinks and is the easiest of the three to install because everything mounts through the countertop or sink deck. If you are unsure, this is the safe modern choice.

Type 02 โ€” The Statement

Vessel: for the sink that sits on top

Best for above-counter bowls and raised basins

A vessel faucet is a single-hole faucet stretched tall so its spout arcs over a bowl that sits on the counter instead of in it. This is the boldest modern look โ€” the faucet becomes sculpture โ€” but height is not optional. The spout has to physically clear the rim of the raised bowl, so vessel faucets run 10 to 17 in tall where a single-hole faucet is short.

โ€œA vessel bowl doesn't need a taller faucet to look good โ€” it needs one to work at all.โ€ โ€” The VIGO Design Team

  • The honest catch โ€” height is a hard requirement, not a style choice. Measure your bowl from counter to rim, then add 4โ€“6 in of arc clearance. A 6 in tall bowl needs a spout roughly 10โ€“12 in above the counter โ€” a standard single-hole faucet will not clear it.
  • The honest catch โ€” splash is real. If the spout sits more than 3โ€“4 in above the rim, the stream falls harder and bounces. Aim the water toward the drain and keep clearance modest.

Type 03 โ€” The Floating Look

Wall-mount: nothing on the counter

Best for vessel bowls, floating vanities and stone counters you don't want to drill

A wall-mount faucet puts the spout and handles into the wall, so the countertop stays completely clear โ€” the most architectural, spa-like modern look, and the easiest surface to wipe clean. The trade-off is plumbing: the valve body has to be roughed into the wall about 2 in behind the finished surface, which usually means opening the wall during a remodel.

  • The honest catch โ€” you need a rough-in valve. The trim you see is only half the fixture; a separate valve mounts inside the wall and ties into the hot and cold lines. Both are required, and depth matters โ€” account for tile thickness so the spout seats flush.
  • The honest catch โ€” spout reach must clear the bowl. Because the faucet is fixed in the wall, you can't nudge it later โ€” confirm the spout reaches past the center of the basin before the valve is set.

The Traditional-Modern Bridge

What about widespread faucets?

A widespread faucet uses three separate holes on a standard 8 in spread โ€” spout in the center, two handles on the sides. It reads more classic than a single-hole faucet, but a clean-lined model like the Cass Widespread keeps it firmly modern while giving you separate hot and cold control. Choose it when your sink is already drilled for three holes.

The Fun Part

Which modern finish should you choose?

Across the modern range you'll see the same four finishes, and each sends a different signal. Matte black is the graphic, high-contrast modern staple. Matte brushed gold reads warm and current without the shine of polished brass. Brushed nickel is the soft, forgiving neutral that hides water spots. Chrome is the bright, timeless classic. Match your faucet to your cabinet hardware and mirror frame, not to the light fixtures.

  • A quick rule that always works โ€” warm room (wood tones, cream tile) โ†’ brushed gold or matte black.
  • Cool room (gray, white, marble) โ†’ brushed nickel or chrome.
  • High-drama modern โ†’ matte black against a light stone counter is the most reliable showroom move.

Read the Silhouette

Do spout profiles actually matter?

Yes โ€” the spout shape sets the whole mood. A low-arc spout (Davidson) feels calm and minimal and splashes less in a shallow sink. A squared or right-angle spout (Apollo, Duris) reads sharp and architectural. A tall curved column (Amada Vessel) becomes the sculptural centerpiece. Before you fall for a profile, confirm two numbers: spout height clears your bowl, and spout reach lands the water near the drain.

Questions, answered

Can I put a regular single-hole faucet on a vessel sink?

Usually not. A raised vessel bowl sits on top of the counter, so a standard single-hole faucet is too short to arc over the rim. You need a dedicated vessel faucet, typically 10 to 17 in tall, or a wall-mount faucet whose spout reaches past the bowl's center.

How tall should a vessel faucet be?

Measure your bowl from the counter to its rim, then add 4 to 6 in of clearance for a comfortable water arc. A 6 in tall bowl needs a spout roughly 10 to 12 in above the counter. Too high and water splashes; too low and it's hard to wash your hands.

Is a wall-mount faucet hard to install?

It's more involved than a deck-mounted faucet. A wall-mount needs a rough-in valve set inside the wall โ€” about 2 in behind the finished surface โ€” tied to the hot and cold lines. That usually means opening the wall, so it's easiest to plan during a remodel rather than as a swap.

Is matte black harder to keep clean than chrome?

Matte black and brushed finishes actually hide water spots and fingerprints better than polished chrome, which shows every droplet. The trade-off is that matte black shows dust and dried soap film more, so a quick wipe with a soft damp cloth keeps any modern finish looking its best.

What's the difference between single-hole and widespread?

A single-hole faucet mounts through one hole with a single lever โ€” the cleanest modern look. A widespread faucet uses three holes on a standard 8 in spread, with the spout and two handles separate. Choose based on how your sink or counter is already drilled.
