Types of Shower Glass, Explained: Clear, Low-Iron, Frosted, Fluted & Easy-Clean
A plain-English tour of the glass behind the door โ what clear, low-iron, frosted, fluted, patterned and coated actually do for privacy, light and upkeep, and how thick each should be.
The short answer
Shower glass comes in a handful of flavors: clear tempered (the everyday standard), low-iron (ultra-clear, no green tint), frosted/obscure (privacy that still passes light), fluted/reeded (vertical ribs, on-trend texture), rain or patterned (decorative privacy), and easy-clean coated such as VIGO ProtecGlass laminated glass. Pick clear or low-iron when you want to show off tile; pick frosted, fluted or patterned when you want privacy. VIGO frameless glass is 3/8 in. (10 mm) tempered; framed and semi-framed styles use thinner tempered glass held by a frame.
What are the main types of shower glass?
Almost every shower door on the market is tempered safety glass โ heat-treated so it's stronger than ordinary glass and, if it ever breaks, crumbles into small blunt pebbles instead of shards (the behavior required by standards like ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201). What changes from door to door is the look of that glass: how clear it is, how much it hides, and whether it's textured or coated. Here are the six you'll actually shop for.
Clear tempered
The default, and for good reason. Clear glass is fully transparent, makes a small bathroom feel bigger, and puts your tile, stone and fixtures on full display. It's the easiest to match to any style and usually the most affordable. The trade-off: zero privacy, and every water spot shows โ so this is the pane that most rewards a squeegee habit.
Low-iron (ultra-clear)
Standard float glass has a faint green cast you notice most at the edges and on thicker panels. Low-iron glass strips out most of that iron content, so whites read white and marble reads true instead of tinted. If your bathroom is pale, bright or heavy on natural stone, low-iron is the upgrade that makes the glass "disappear." It costs more than standard clear, and against a dark or busy scheme the difference is subtle.
Frosted / obscure
Acid-etched or sandblasted glass scatters light so you get privacy without turning the shower into a dark box. It softens the whole enclosure, hides hard-water spotting better than clear, and is a favorite for shared or guest baths. You lose the "showcase the tile" effect, and a frosted surface can feel busier to keep looking even.
Fluted / reeded
Vertical ribs pressed into the glass bend light and blur what's behind them โ semi-privacy with a lot of character. It's the texture everyone's asking for right now, equally at home in a warm modern or a period bath. If you're weighing it, we broke down the look and how to actually get it in why fluted glass is the texture of 2026. The ribs need a little more attention in the valleys when you clean, but the payoff is a door that reads like a design feature.
Rain / patterned
"Rain" glass and other cast patterns carry a repeating texture across the whole pane โ think gentle ripples or a mosaic-style relief. Like fluted, it delivers decorative privacy while still letting light through, and it hides water marks better than clear. It's more of a statement, so it pairs best when the rest of the room stays quiet.
Easy-clean coated (VIGO ProtecGlass)
Rather than change how the glass looks, easy-clean options change how it behaves. A hydrophobic treatment makes water bead and sheet off instead of drying into spots, so there's far less scrubbing. VIGO's take is ProtecGlass, an easy-clean laminated glass โ we walk through what it is and how to shop for it in ProtecGlass, explained. It's the choice for anyone whose real question about shower glass is "how do I clean this less often?"
How thick should shower glass be?
Thickness follows the frame โ or the lack of one. A frameless door has no metal holding it up, so the glass itself has to be rigid: that's why VIGO frameless doors and enclosures use 3/8 in. (10 mm) tempered glass. Framed and semi-framed styles lean on an aluminum frame for support, so they can use thinner tempered glass and still feel solid. Neither is "safer" โ both are fully tempered โ it's a look-and-feel and price decision.
| Configuration | Typical VIGO glass |
|---|---|
| Frameless door / enclosure | 3/8 in. (10 mm) tempered |
| Semi-framed door or screen | Thinner tempered, partly frame-supported |
| Framed slider / tub screen | Thinner tempered, fully frame-supported |
Thicker glass looks and sounds more substantial and holds a big frameless span without wobble; thinner framed glass keeps the price down and can be lighter to operate. Clear or low-iron โ and how much privacy do you actually need?
Think of it as two sliders. One is clarity: standard clear is bright and honest; low-iron is the same view with the green removed. The other is privacy: clear and low-iron show everything, frosted and patterned hide most of it, and fluted sits in between โ you read shapes and light, not detail. For a primary bath where the shower faces a wall, clear or low-iron keeps the room feeling open. For a guest bath, a shower that faces a door, or a home with roommates, frosted or fluted buys comfort without going dark. There's no wrong answer; there's just which slider matters more to you.
How do I keep shower glass looking clear?
Water spots are minerals, not dirt, so the fix is drying the glass before they dry on it. A quick squeegee after each shower does most of the work on any glass type. Textured styles โ fluted, rain, patterned โ want a soft brush in the grooves now and then. And if upkeep is your main worry, an easy-clean coated pane like ProtecGlass is engineered to shed water so the spots have less chance to form in the first place. Skip abrasive pads and harsh acids on any shower glass; they can dull the surface or attack a coating.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common type of shower glass?
Clear tempered glass. It's fully transparent, shows off your tile, makes a small bathroom feel larger, and is usually the most affordable option โ which is why it's the default on most doors and enclosures.
Is low-iron glass worth the upgrade?
It depends on your palette. Low-iron removes the faint green tint of standard glass, so whites and natural stone look true. In a pale, bright or marble-heavy bathroom it's a noticeable upgrade; against a dark or busy scheme the difference is subtle and may not justify the added cost.
Does frosted glass give full privacy?
It obscures the view and hides detail while still letting light through, so the shower doesn't go dark. It is not a blackout โ you'll read light and rough shapes โ but it's plenty of privacy for most guest and shared bathrooms.
How thick is VIGO frameless shower glass?
VIGO frameless doors and enclosures use 3/8 in. (10 mm) tempered glass, which is rigid enough to stand on its own without a frame. Framed and semi-framed styles use thinner tempered glass supported by an aluminum frame.
What is VIGO ProtecGlass?
ProtecGlass is VIGO's easy-clean laminated glass. It's treated so water beads and sheets off rather than drying into hard-water spots, which means less scrubbing and clearer glass between deep cleans.
Is fluted or textured glass harder to clean?
Slightly โ the ribs and grooves collect a bit more residue than a flat pane, so they benefit from a soft brush now and then. A quick squeegee after showers and skipping abrasive cleaners keeps any textured glass looking good.
