Sliding vs. Pivot vs. Hinged Shower Doors: Clearance and Walk-Through, Measured
A slider never swings, but it gives up entry width. A hinged or pivot door can open wider, but it claims the floor in front of the shower. Here are the numbers that decide it, from VIGO's own spec listings and the model building code, so you can choose with a tape measure instead of a hunch.

The Pirouette pivot door in matte black. Every swinging door asks for floor; the question is whether your bathroom has it.
In short: A sliding (bypass) door needs no swing room, but on VIGO's frameless sliders the walk-through is only about 40 percent of the opening: the Elan lists 22โ26 in. of entry in a 56โ60 in. alcove. A hinged door can open wider (the Meridian Hinged lists 27 in. in a 60 in. alcove), and a pivot door fits openings as narrow as 30 in., but both swing outward through an arc as wide as the door, so installers plan on roughly the door width plus 4 in. of clear floor in front. If a toilet or vanity sits inside that arc, choose the slider; if the floor is open and entry width matters most, choose a hinged or pivot door.
- Sliders need zero swing space, but on VIGO's single sliders the walk-through is about 40 percent of the opening.
- A pivot door turns on top-and-bottom pivots; a hinged door hangs from side hinges. VIGO's Pirouette and Meridian Hinged both open outward.
- The 2018 IRC model code calls for 24 in. of clear floor in front of a shower and for hinged doors that open outward. Check what your jurisdiction adopted.
- Read the walk-through range, not the glass width: a 26 in. Pirouette door lists 20โ26 in.
- Tempered glass can't be cut or drilled after tempering, so buy the right size range.

01 โ Sliding
How wide is the opening on a sliding shower door?
On a single bypass slider, roughly 40 percent of the opening, which is narrower than most people expect. One glass panel stays put and the other rolls along the top rail past it, so the two always overlap. VIGO's Elan lists a 22โ26 in. walk-through in its 56โ60 in. size and just 16โ20 in. at 44โ48 in. The Luca in the photo, sold in the 56โ60 in. size, lists the same 22โ26 in.
In exchange you get zero swing. A toilet tight against the shower wall, or a vanity drawer that opens across the shower front, matters far less, which is why a slider is usually the easy answer when a small bathroom puts the toilet right beside the shower. Our guide to shower doors for awkward bathrooms covers the tightest cases. Double sliders move the entry point instead: the Paloma's two doors part in the center of the alcove, and the Satro E-Class lists dual entry.

Pirouette in chrome: pivot blocks at the top and bottom corners and a slim fixed panel beside the door.
02 โ Pivot
What is the difference between a pivot and a hinged shower door?
The hardware it turns on. A hinged door hangs from hinges fastened along one side edge, into the wall or a fixed glass panel. A pivot door rotates on pivots at its top and bottom corners, so there are no hinge plates down its side and the line of the glass stays clean.
Don't assume a pivot door swings both ways. VIGO's Pirouette is specified to open outward, installs with the opening on the left or the right, and closes on a full-length magnetic catch (MagnaLockโข) with seal strips top and bottom (Seal-Thruโข).
Every Pirouette pairs the door with fixed glass. The 30โ36 in. size has a 26 in. door and a listed 20โ26 in. walk-through; the 36โ42 in. size has a 32 in. door and 26โ32 in. Sizes from 42 in. up to 60โ66 in. add a third glass piece. Whatever the size, the door itself sweeps an arc into the room.

The Meridian Hinged: a door and fixed side panel spanning a 60 in. alcove.
03 โ Hinged
Which is better, a sliding or a hinged shower door?
Neither, in the abstract: it depends on the floor in front of your shower. A hinged door gives the most open entry for its size, and a slider leaves the room around it free.
The Meridian Hinged makes the trade concrete. It fits a 59.5โ60 in. opening at 74 in. tall, with a 29 in. door beside a fixed side panel, and lists a 27 in. walk-through. That is 1 to 5 in. more than the Elan's 22โ26 in. at 56โ60 in.; the price is a 29 in. door swinging outward. It installs with the handle on the left or the right.
Choose hinged if about 33 in. in front of the shower is clear (the rule of thumb is below) and you want the widest, most door-like entry. Choose sliding if the toilet, the vanity or the bathroom door lives in that zone.
04 โ One Alcove, Three Ways
What does each style give you in the same 60-inch alcove?
The hinged door gives the widest entry, 27 in., but swings the widest arc; the slider gives 22โ26 in. with no swing at all; the pivot gives 20โ26 in. with a slightly smaller arc than the hinged door. Here is the same alcove fitted three ways, with VIGO's published specs and October 2026 prices.
At this width the pivot enters no wider than the slider; it earns its place in narrower openings, where no VIGO slider goes. Prices change. The geometry doesn't.
05 โ Width by Opening
How much walk-through do you get at each opening width?
On VIGO's doors, anywhere from 16 in. on the smallest Elan slider to 32 in. on the widest doors, climbing with the opening. The figures below come from VIGO's own spec listings; where a range is given, plan on the low end.
Two patterns stand out. Below about 48 in., a swinging door is the way to a generous entry: at 44โ48 in. the Pirouette lists 4โ6 in. more than the Elan slider. Sliders only get roomy past 60 in.
The ranges come from the hardware, not the glass. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering, so each door adjusts through its fittings: 6 in. of horizontal Flex-Sizingโข on the Pirouette, and 4 in. on the Elan plus RollerDiskโข's 3/8 in. for out-of-plumb walls. Our shower door measuring guide shows where to measure.
06 โ Clearance and Swing
How much room does a swinging shower door need?
About the door width plus 4 in. of clear floor in front of the shower. That is the rule of thumb in Dulles Glass's clearance guide, which presents it as installer guidance, not code: the arc's radius equals the panel width, and the extra inches cover the handle and comfortable movement. For the Meridian's 29 in. door, that is about 33 in. Check the arc at the floor, at toilet-rim height (about 17 in.), where the guide says doors most often collide, and at vanity height (about 36 in.).
Then the model code. As Building Code Trainer summarizes the 2018 International Residential Code, Section R307.1 asks for at least 24 in. of clearance in front of a shower opening, and Section P2708.1 says hinged shower doors shall open outward (so someone who falls inside can't block the door) and that the entry needs a clear, unobstructed finished width of at least 22 in. These are model-code figures; your jurisdiction may have adopted another edition or amendments, so confirm with your building department.
Several VIGO sizes list a walk-through that starts below 22 in.: the Elan at 44โ48, 48โ52 and 52โ56 in., and the Pirouette sizes with a 26 in. door (30โ36, 42โ48 and 54โ60 in.). If your jurisdiction enforces that figure, pick a size or style whose stated range clears it, such as the Meridian Hinged's 27 in. or the 36โ42 in. Pirouette's 26โ32 in., and confirm the walk-through for your exact width before ordering.
07 โ Hinge Side
Which side should the shower door hinge be on?
On whichever side lets the open door rest out of everyone's way. To avoid any mix-up over "left-hand" and "right-hand", describe it by where the hinges sit as you face the shower. Then check four things:
- Tape out the arc. A quarter circle centered on the hinge, radius equal to the door width. Toilet bowl, vanity drawer and bathroom door stay outside it.
- Park the door against something. Fully open, it should rest beside a wall or its own fixed panel, not across the path to the toilet.
- Start the water from outside. With the valve on an end wall, an opening at that end lets you turn it on without stepping into the cold first spray.
- Handle where you dry off. The handle sits opposite the hinges, on the side you step out toward, so keep the towel there.
You rarely order a hand. The Pirouette, the Meridian Hinged and the clear-glass Elan list reversible left- or right-side installation. The exception is the Elan with privacy glass, which is listed by installation side, so check that the version you order matches your plan.
08 โ Decide
Sliding, pivot or hinged: how do you choose in three measurements?
- The finished opening. Under 44 in., VIGO's door for the job is the Pirouette pivot (30โ36 or 36โ42 in.). From 44 in. the Elan slider comes in; at 56โ60 in. all three styles fit.
- The clear floor in front. Measure out to the nearest obstruction: toilet bowl, vanity edge or the bathroom door's swing. Less than the door width plus about 4 in.? Choose the slider.
- The entry you need. Compare the low end of each walk-through range. For 26 in. or more, look at the Meridian Hinged, the 36โ42 or 60โ66 in. Pirouette, or a 68โ72 in. Elan E-Class.

Questions, answered
Should a shower door swing in or out?
Out. Section P2708.1 of the 2018 IRC model code says hinged shower doors shall open outward, which keeps someone who falls inside from blocking the door; check what your jurisdiction adopted. VIGO's Pirouette and Meridian Hinged both open outward.
Do pivot shower doors swing both ways?
Not necessarily. Some pivot hardware can, but VIGO's Pirouette is specified to open outward and its listing doesn't describe a two-way swing, so plan for its full arc on the bathroom side.
What is the minimum shower door opening width?
The 2018 IRC model code calls for a clear, unobstructed entry at least 22 in. wide; local adoption varies. Compare it with the door's listed walk-through, not its glass width: a 26 in. Pirouette door lists as little as 20 in.
Can I put a pivot or hinged door on a 48-inch shower?
Yes, as a door plus fixed glass. The Pirouette's 42โ48 in. size lists a 20โ26 in. walk-through versus 16โ20 in. for a 44โ48 in. Elan slider, but by the installer rule of thumb its 26 in. door needs about 30 in. of clear floor to swing.
Do pivot shower doors leak more than sliding doors?
We know of no data showing that either style leaks more; the seals, sweeps, threshold and floor slope matter more than how the door opens. The Pirouette closes on a full-length magnetic catch with seal strips along the top and bottom.
Which shower door is best for a small bathroom with the toilet next to the shower?
Usually a slider, since it needs no swing space. For a swinging door, tape out the arc first and keep about the door width plus 4 in. clear, at toilet-rim height as well as at the floor.
