The Cass Elan frameless slider: $1,159.90 in matte black, $1,214.90 in matte brushed gold as of October 2026. Finish is one of the clearest price levers on a stock door.

At a glance

A new glass shower door typically costs $400โ€“$1,100 installed if it is framed and $600โ€“$1,900 if it is frameless, according to HomeGuide's 2026 cost guide; custom-cut frameless glass runs $1,400โ€“$3,300. Labor alone is $150โ€“$600 in the same guide, and removing the old door adds $30โ€“$100. For the door itself, VIGO's in-stock shower doors run from $379.90 for a framed slider to $1,239.90 for a frameless slider in matte brushed gold (October 2026 prices), and glass enclosures start at $764.90.

Framed and semi-frameless sliders: VIGO from $379.90 and $464.90.
Frameless sliding and pivot doors: VIGO from $464.90 to $1,239.90.
Enclosures: VIGO from $764.90 (square) and $804.90 (neo-angle or rectangle); HomeGuide puts frameless enclosures at $800โ€“$3,600 installed.
Custom-cut frameless: an adjustable stock door that fits your opening is the main way to stay below that $1,400โ€“$3,300 bracket.
On a stock door, finish moves the price more than glass pattern: $350 separates chrome from matte brushed gold on the same 56โ€“60 in. Elan.

01 โ€” The Price Matrix

How much does a shower door cost in 2026?

A new shower door costs roughly $400 to $1,900 installed for standard framed and frameless doors, and $1,400 to $3,300 when the glass is custom-cut, according to HomeGuide's February 2026 cost guide, which is built from contractor estimates. The door sets the floor; labor, fit and finish set the rest.

The matrix below lines up both views. "VIGO from" is the lowest current price among in-stock variants on October 19, 2026; prices move and many items show a compare-at price, so treat them as dated. "Stock + labor" is our own arithmetic: the lowest and highest starting prices in that row plus HomeGuide's labor band ($150โ€“$550 framed, $200โ€“$600 frameless, $150โ€“$600 for semi-frameless and mixed rows), before removing the old door or any local surcharges.

Custom-cut framelessNo stock price: measured and fabricated for one opening ยท HomeGuide installed: $1,400โ€“$3,300 ยท Dulles Glass quotes $1,500โ€“$3,500 for custom frameless hinged

Read across any row and the pattern holds: a stock door plus a professional install usually lands inside the independent installed range, often in its lower half. The gap opens at the bottom of the table, where fabrication replaces a box off the shelf.

02 โ€” Labor and Removal

How much do installers charge just to hang a shower door?

Labor alone typically runs $150 to $550 for a framed door and $200 to $600 for a frameless one, according to HomeGuide. Custom installs climb to $800โ€“$1,500 in the same guide, and that job usually starts with a measuring visit before the glass is made. Glaziers who bill by the hour charge $100โ€“$150 for the first hour and $35โ€“$75 for each hour after, by HomeGuide's count.

This Old House's March 2026 guide lands in the same neighborhood: $50 to $100 an hour, flat fees that may start around $200 per door, and two to four hours for most standard installs. HomeGuide's estimate for the job itself is one to four hours.

  • Removing the old door. HomeGuide prices removal and disposal at $30โ€“$100. Ask whether it is in the quote, and keep a small cushion in case the old frame is hiding cracked tile.
  • Fresh silicone. New sealant where the glass meets the walls and the base is part of a proper install. Cure time belongs to the sealant manufacturer, not the door, so follow the tube before the first shower.
  • Doing it yourself. DIY removes the labor line, not the work. HomeGuide notes it takes special tools and at least two people to handle the heavy glass. VIGO listings such as the Cass Elan and Houston note that all parts and mounting hardware come in the box, and our weekend install guide walks through the sequence.

One scope note: this guide covers shower openings. If your glass sits on a bathtub, the price ladder is different, and our bathtub door replacement cost guide has those numbers.

03 โ€” Custom vs. Stock

Why are custom frameless shower doors so expensive?

Because every panel is made once, for one opening. A custom door is measured on site, then the glass is cut, edged and drilled, and only then tempered. Tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering, so a measuring mistake means a new panel. HomeGuide says fabrication typically takes two to seven days after the measure, and then the installer comes back to set it.

Dulles Glass, a custom shop, published its own breakdown of where a frameless hinged door's price goes:

Glass40โ€“50% โ€” the premium comes from the thicker glass itself
Hardware20โ€“30% โ€” structural hardware rated for the weight of the glass
Fabrication and tempering10โ€“15% โ€” holes must be drilled before the glass is tempered
Installation labor15โ€“25% โ€” wall blocking, sealing and on-site adjustment

A stock door skips that loop by building the tolerance into the hardware. VIGO's Elan E-Class is sold in 4 in. width bands from 44โ€“48 in. up to 68โ€“72 in.: Flex-Sizingโ„ข gives 4 in. of horizontal adjustment during installation, RollerDiskโ„ข adds up to 3/8 in. and SmartAdjustโ„ข up to 1/2 in. more. The Pirouette pivot door offers 6 in. of Flex-Sizing, in ranges from 30โ€“36 in. to 60โ€“66 in.

HomeGuide says doors wider than 60 in. or taller than 76 in. require custom glass. That holds for many stock lines, but not all of them: the Elan E-Class reaches 72 in. wide, and the Hamilton slider stands 78 in. tall. If your opening fits a range like that, the custom line on a quote is optional.

04 โ€” Upgrades

What adds to the cost of a shower door?

On a stock door, finish moves the price more than size or glass pattern does, and extras in the box can add a few hundred dollars more. VIGO prices below are as of October 2026.

  • Finish. The Elan at 56โ€“60 in. is $889.90 in chrome, $1,059.90 in matte black and $1,239.90 in matte brushed gold. The Elan E-Class at the same width is $804.90, $944.90 and $974.90. Black is not always the premium, though: the framed Satro is $379.90 in matte black and $404.90 in chrome.
  • Glass pattern. Often less than you would expect. On the Elan, grid and striped glass cost the same as clear in matte black, and privacy glass matches clear in chrome. Fluted adds $15 on the Meridian framed screen and $85 on the Arden frameless screen.
  • Coatings. Every Elan listing includes ProtecGlassโ„ข: laminated tempered glass with an easy-to-clean, scratch-resistant surface that repels water and stains. Bought as an add-on, a water-spot-resistant coating runs $4โ€“$20 per square foot extra, according to This Old House.
  • Thickness. Glass shops quote by the square foot: HomeGuide lists standard 3/8 in. clear glass at $12โ€“$50 and thicker 1/2 in. at $15โ€“$58. On stock doors, read each listing, because thickness varies by model. The Satro E-Class semi-frameless door, for instance, lists 3/8 in. tempered glass.
  • Height. Most of the stock doors in this guide stand 72 to 76 in. tall, the same norm HomeGuide gives for shower doors generally. The Hamilton reaches 78 in. without a custom order; it is sold in matte brushed gold at $1,144.90, so its price reflects the finish as well as the height.
  • A base in the box. For corner units, a shower pan changes the math. The Piedmont neo-angle is $804.90 as glass only and $1,079.90 with a standard or low-profile pan.

05 โ€” Enclosures

How much does a glass shower enclosure or neo-angle shower cost?

A stock frameless enclosure starts at $764.90 in VIGO's catalog, for the Monteray square at 30 x 30 in. Neo-angle corners start at $804.90 (Piedmont) and $934.90 (Gemini). Rectangles start at $804.90 with the Pacifica and run up to $1,304.90 for the Elan Winslow in matte brushed gold.

Installed, HomeGuide puts frameless glass enclosures at $800โ€“$3,600 and framed neo-angle units at $650โ€“$1,550. HomeGuide ties that spread to size and style, and to whether the enclosure is prefabricated or custom-built.

Two questions settle most enclosure budgets early. Does the unit include a base, or are you tiling a floor and building a curb? And is your corner a standard size, or will the glass need to be cut for it? On the stock side, the Monteray and Gemini both list 3/8 in. tempered glass, so you know what you are paying for before an installer quotes the labor.

06 โ€” Save or Spend

Is a stock shower door kit worth it compared with a custom-cut door?

For most standard alcoves, yes. Much of the gap pays for one-off work: a measuring visit, glass fabricated for your opening and a longer install, which HomeGuide prices at $800โ€“$1,500 against $200โ€“$600 for a standard frameless door. A 44โ€“48 in. Elan E-Class in chrome ($719.90) plus that frameless labor band lands around $920โ€“$1,320, while custom frameless starts at $1,400 installed in the same guide.

Custom earns its price when the opening asks for something no stock range offers. Here is a quick way to sort the money:

  • Stock fits when your opening falls inside a door's width band, the walls are within the hardware's adjustment, and a 72 to 78 in. height works.
  • Custom fits when you need glass to the ceiling, notches around a bench or knee wall, a steam-tight enclosure, or an angle no stock kit is made for.
  • Save on chrome or stainless instead of matte brushed gold, keeping the existing footprint, and DIY if you have a second pair of hands.
  • Spend on an easy-clean glass surface, a finish that matches your faucets, and a careful installer if your walls are out of plumb.

Whether frameless is worth the step up from framed at all is its own question, and we have answered it in Are Frameless Shower Doors Really Worth It?

Questions, answered

How much does it cost to replace a shower door?

HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts a full replacement at $580โ€“$1,650, covering removal and disposal of the old door ($30โ€“$100), the new door and installation labor. Swapping in a new door of the same size and style is the cheapest version of the job.

Can a stock shower door be cut down to fit my opening?

No. Shower door glass is tempered, and tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering. Stock doors fit through adjustable hardware and width bands instead, so measure first and choose the range your opening falls into.

How long does a shower door installation take?

HomeGuide estimates one to four hours to hang a door, plus two to seven days of fabrication after the measure if the glass is custom. VIGO publishes no install time, so treat any figure as an estimate, and let the silicone cure for as long as the sealant manufacturer specifies.

Is it cheaper to buy the door yourself and pay only for installation?

Often, if your opening fits a stock size. Paired with HomeGuide's labor-only band ($150โ€“$550 framed, $200โ€“$600 frameless), entry and mid-priced stock doors land below the $1,400 floor the same guide gives for custom frameless work. Confirm first that the installer will hang a customer-supplied door, and get their workmanship terms in writing.

What is the price difference between framed and frameless shower doors?

HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts framed doors at $400โ€“$1,100 installed and frameless doors at $600โ€“$1,900, or $250โ€“$750 versus $400โ€“$1,300 for the door alone. In VIGO's October 2026 catalog, the framed Satro slider starts at $379.90, while frameless sliders start at $464.90 (Amada) and $719.90 (Elan E-Class).

Price the opening before you price the glass

Measure first. If your opening falls inside a stock door's adjustable range, the money a custom quote spends on fabrication can go to the finish and the glass you actually want. Start with VIGO's shower doors and compare each tier against your installer's labor quote.
