How-To & Care โ€” Shower Doors

How to Fix a Shower Door That Sticks, Sags, Jumps the Track or Won't Close

Most misbehaving shower doors aren't broken. They're dirty, out of level or loose at a screw. Here's how to tell which, symptom by symptom, for sliding, hinged and pivot doors, and where a do-it-yourself fix should stop and a call to VIGO support begins.

A frameless top-roller slider in matte black. On this kind of door, most fixes live in two places: the rail overhead and the guide at the floor.

01

Know your door

What's actually adjustable on a shower door?

Rollers, rail level, floor guide and stops on a slider; hinges and fasteners on a hinged door; pivots and the catch on a pivot door. That short list is good news, because it is also your list of suspects. Find your door type below, then dig out the installation manual: model-specific steps live there, and the SKU on your order confirmation tells you which one you need.

Frameless sliderTop rollers on a rail, floor guide, door stops; RollerDiskโ„ข (up to 3/8 in.) and SmartAdjustโ„ข on models such as the Elan, Luca and Hamilton
Soft-close sliderVMotionโ„ข, which VIGO describes on the Houston as concealed rollers that slide quietly with soft closing; SmartAdjustโ„ข wall-mount brackets on the Houston
Framed / semi-frameless sliderRollers, top rail or header, bottom track or guides, seals (for example the Satro and Satro E-Class)
Hinged doorHinges, wall fasteners, seal strips, the closing-side strip or catch (Meridian Hinged; Orion and Rialto hinged tub doors)
Pivot doorTop and bottom pivots; MagnaLockโ„ข magnetic catch and Seal-Thruโ„ข seals on the Pirouette

Most of these ranges are used up at installation (the Pirouette's Flex-Sizingโ„ข, for example, gives 6 in. of horizontal adjustability to fit the opening), so re-adjusting a drifted door means returning it to where the installer set it. Treat a soft-close mechanism and hinge tension as hands-off unless your manual shows an adjustment for them.

The safety rules, for every fix below:

  • Protect the edges. Tempered glass is most likely to break from damage at its edge, as Wikipedia's entry on tempered glass explains.
  • Two people for any lift, one supporting the glass at both edges.
  • Never force a door that binds. Find out why it stopped first.
  • Never drill, cut or grind the glass. Tempered glass can't be altered after tempering; it shatters.
  • Gloves and safety glasses on. If an edge is chipped, stop using the door and call support, since small nicks can grow into breaks.
02

Sticks or grinds

Why is my sliding shower door hard to slide, or grinding?

Because something is in the way. Hair, soap film and mineral scale pack into the floor guide and track, and grit rides on the roller wheels. This Old House names dirty tracks as the leading cause of sticky sliding doors, so clean before you adjust anything.

  • Clean the bottom first. Slide the door fully one way, wipe the floor guide, threshold and any track with a soft cloth and mild soap, then repeat from the other side. An old toothbrush reaches the corners.
  • Then look up. With a flashlight, check that each roller sits centered on the rail and turns freely, and wipe the wheels and rail. Our guide to cleaning glass shower doors builds that wipe-down into a monthly routine.
  • Listen as it moves. A scrape at one spot points to a shifted guide or a backed-out fastener. A drag along the whole run means one end has dropped (chapter 04).

Should you lubricate? Sparingly, and only the rollers. Family Handyman suggests a little silicone spray on rollers that don't turn easily, while This Old House's Tom Silva says lubricant doesn't belong on a sliding door's track. Both are right, about different parts: a light mist on a stiff roller can help, but anything on the track or floor guide becomes a grime magnet. Skip oil-based products, which This Old House warns can collect debris, keep lubricant off seals and sweeps, and read the label, since some lubricants can harm plastic.

03

Off the track

Why does my sliding shower door keep coming off the track?

Because something lifted it or let it wander: a door slammed into its stop, a loose floor guide that lets the glass swing, debris that ramps a wheel off the rail, or a rail out of level. On framed and semi-frameless sliders, also suspect a packed bottom track or a worn roller.

To put it back:

  • Two people, gloves on. One supports the glass at both edges; the other guides each roller back onto the rail. Lift only as far as you need.
  • Seat the bottom first. Check that the glass is back in its floor guide and the guide's fasteners are tight.
  • Check the stops. They limit the door's travel, and one that has slid or gone missing lets the door overrun. The Elan E-Class, for one, lists a built-in door stopper.
  • Run it end to end, slowly. If it climbs off at the same spot, look for a bent rail section or a loose wall mount, and fix those before any roller adjustment.

If a wheel is cracked, a bracket is bent or the door derails again after a proper clean and re-seat, stop adjusting. You need parts (chapter 07).

04

Drifts or won't close flush

How do I re-level a sliding door that drifts or won't close flush?

Level the rail first, then close any gap at the wall, one small adjustment at a time. A slider that rolls open or shut by itself is running downhill, because the rail is out of level. A tapered gap against the wall when it's closed usually means an out-of-plumb wall. VIGO's frameless sliders have a named adjustment for each.

  • SmartAdjustโ„ข levels the rail. VIGO's Elan page describes it as adjusting the top rod to accommodate uneven walls and keep the door level; on the Houston it takes the form of adjustable wall-mount brackets. The Elan, Luca and Hamilton listings give it up to 1/2 in. Ranges differ by listing, so use your manual's number.
  • RollerDiskโ„ข closes the wall gap. On models including the Elan, Luca and Hamilton, it provides up to 3/8 in. of adjustment so the door closes flush against an out-of-plumb wall.

Set a level on the rail, not the glass or tile. Make one small adjustment, then re-check level and gap before the next. You're repeating part of the first setup, and our frameless sliding door install guide walks through that setup from placing the rail to setting the stoppers.

If a soft-close door slams or stops short of its soft catch, check the basics before you suspect the mechanism: a clean rail, a level rail and the stops in place. If it still slams after all three check out, call support rather than opening it up.

05

Hinged doors

Why is my hinged shower door sagging, rubbing the curb or not latching?

Usually a hinge or wall fastener has worked loose, letting the door drop just enough to scuff the curb and miss the strip or magnet on the closing side. Hunker's repair guide makes the same point: loose hinge screws let a door sag, framed or frameless.

  • Read the gap. Close the door slowly. A gap along the closing edge that is wider at one end than the other means the door has dropped.
  • Snug, don't crank. Check every hinge screw, wall side and glass side, and snug loose ones by hand rather than with a power driver. The glass-side screws clamp tempered glass, and heavy or random tightening can pull the door further out of line.
  • A screw that spins is a wall problem. Hunker suggests longer screws or new anchors, but in tile that can mean new holes, so call a pro or VIGO support.
  • Then the closing side. If the strips or magnets touch at one end only, the sag still needs fixing. If they meet evenly but won't hold, clean off the soap film and check that no strip has slipped out of its channel.
06

Pivot doors

How do you fix a pivot shower door that swings open by itself?

Check level and plumb first. A pivot door turns on hardware at the top and bottom of the glass. If the line between those points isn't truly vertical, the door swings toward the low side, the same way every time. A door that drifts unpredictably more likely has a catch that isn't holding.

  • Check plumb on the glass. Hold a level against the pivot-side edge. If it's out, look in your manual for a pivot adjustment and follow it exactly, with a helper supporting the door. If the manual shows none, call support.
  • Clean the catch. The Pirouette's MagnaLockโ„ข is a full-length magnetic catch. Soap film and scale on the strips can stop them meeting flush, so wipe them with mild soap and water and dry them.
  • Respect the pivots. Never loosen pivot hardware while it carries the door's weight, and call support if a pivot bracket has worked loose.
07

Repair, claim or replace

Should I repair or replace my shower door, and where do I get parts?

Repair, if the glass is sound. Rollers, guides, seals and hinges are the parts that wear and adjust; the glass is the door itself. Replace the door when the glass is chipped or cracked, when a rail or wall mount is bent or pulling out, or when you can't get the right parts.

Replacement rollers, guides, seals and hinges aren't listed in the online catalog, so parts come through VIGO support. Call 866-591-7792 with the SKU from your order confirmation, the finish, the opening size and photos of the part in place. Matching by eye is how a door ends up with a roller that almost fits. On the same call, ask what the Limited Lifetime Warranty covers for your door rather than assuming either way.

If the door works but the bottom drips, the fix is in the seals, sweeps and floor slope, and our guide to why frameless shower doors leak covers all three.

After that, do a hardware check every few months. By our estimate it takes about ten minutes:

  • Wipe the rail, rollers and floor guide, then run the door end to end and listen for scraping.
  • Put a level on the rail, or on the pivot-side edge of a pivot door.
  • Snug any hinge, bracket or guide screw that has backed out.
  • Look along every exposed glass edge for chips, and check seals and sweeps for splits.

In short

Most shower-door problems need cleaning or an adjustment, not a new door. Sliders that stick, drift or jump the track usually have a dirty floor guide, a missing stop or a rail out of level, and VIGO's RollerDiskโ„ข sliders offer up to 3/8 in. of adjustment to close a gap at an out-of-plumb wall. Hinged and pivot doors that sag or won't stay shut usually have a loose fastener, an out-of-plumb line or a dirty magnetic catch. Clean, level, then snug only what your manual shows, never force, drill or trim the tempered glass, and call VIGO support at 866-591-7792 for parts.

Questions, answered

Can I use WD-40 on shower door rollers?

We'd skip it. A silicone-based spray, used sparingly on the roller axles, is the safer choice, and This Old House advises against oil-based lubricants. Keep anything slippery off the track, floor guide, seals and sweeps.

How do I find out which VIGO door model I have?

Check the SKU on your order confirmation or the retailer's product listing (VIGO door SKUs begin with VG), and keep the installation manual from the box. Without either, photos of the rollers or hinges, the handle and the whole door help VIGO support identify it.

Why does my sliding shower door squeak or rattle?

A squeak usually means grit on the rollers or a floor guide packed with soap film and hair, while a rattle usually means a loose floor guide or a fastener that has backed out. Clean the rollers, rail and floor guide and snug any loose guide screw first; if a roller still squeaks, use a light silicone mist on the roller axles only.

Can I replace shower door rollers myself?

Usually, but it's a two-person job, because the door has to come off the rail: you need the exact replacement part, your installation manual and a helper to support the glass. Rollers are model-specific, so order them through VIGO support rather than matching by eye, and ask about a pro if you'd rather not lift the glass.

Is a sagging or derailed shower door covered by warranty?

VIGO shower doors carry VIGO's Limited Lifetime Warranty for residential installations, but whether a particular sag or derailment is covered depends on its cause, the part and the installation. Call 866-591-7792 with your SKU, proof of purchase and photos, and ask before you buy replacement parts elsewhere.

Clean, level, snug, then call

Almost every fix in this guide uses one of those first three verbs, done gently and in that order. When a door needs more, VIGO support at 866-591-7792 is the next step. When it's simply time for new glass, the full range of VIGO shower doors covers sliding, hinged and pivot styles.
